English in London

If there´s one certain thing in life, it´s that you will never be bored in London! Just take a look at "Time Out", the 'daddy' of all city-listings magazines to see the huge number of events and activities held in the city every week.

Fancy a night-out at the theatre? No problem– London is the world's theatre capital. Or what about a night out clubbing? Take your pick - London has one of the largest club scene in the world.

There are so many events happening at the same time in London that to take part in just a fraction of them would be impossible!
London Bridge
What about a visit to one of the world-famous museums? Or maybe dinner in a fancy restaurant? Indian, Chinese, West African, Indonesian, Mexican– the choice is endless.

Over the centuries the city has embraced so many cultures from all over the world that a visitor simply cannot take all of them in.

But then again, does it come as a surprise that London presents such a vibrant and colourful picture when one third of the world once was influenced by the British Empire?
A must see location is Greenwich which lies on the River Thames, 20-minutes by rail, or a short river cruise from central London.

It is a lively, student-centred area with dozens of cafés, bars and clothes boutiques.

In addition to the attractive parklands alongside the River, Greenwich is world famous for being home to the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), The Royal Observatory, National Maritime Museum and the Millennium Dome.
Excursion in the afternooon
Throughout the year students have the option to participate in extra-curricular social programs. In the summer months, many students spend their time in the local parks where sports activities can be enjoyed at a variety of tennis courts, cricket pitches and woodlands – also ideal for walking or cycling.

London in a Nutshell

● Location
The history of the capital of the United Kingdom goes back two thousand years to when it was originally a Roman settlement. Since then it has been the site of many major historical events and developments, and is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. London lies in the south east of England, and with Great London having a population of over 8 million, it is the most populated city in Europe.
● Famous for
Fashion and shopping, the Royal Family, black taxis and double decker buses, the many famous sights, Notting Hill, the London Eye.
● School surroundings
There are excellent local amenities including shopping centres, a local library, sports facilities, cinemas, theatres, plenty of restaurants and many typical English pubs close to the school. Ealing Common Park is just around the corner.
● Cities, towns and villages nearby
Brighton, Oxford, Cambridge.
● Places of interest
London Eye, National Gallery, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, Speakers Corner, Downing Street, St. Paul's Cathedral, Madame Tussauds.

● Shopping
London is the dream destination for anyone who likes shopping. And there's no better place to start your shopping spree than the Oxford and Piccadilly high streets. Regent Street or the famous Harrods and Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge, on the other hand, are where you'll find the big designer labels.

Looking for something a bit out of the ordinary? There are over 83 street markets in London - the most famous being Portobello Road and the Camden Town Market - selling everything from antiques and old books, to jellied eels and other English delicacies! Shops are usually open Monday to Sunday from 09:00 - 18:00.
● Nightlife
London's nightlife needs no introduction. There really is something for everyone here - theatres, wine bars and comedy clubs for those looking for a more cultured evening, wild clubs for the party animals, and plenty of pubs to enjoy the evening out the English way.
● Public transport facilities
Public transport in London is very good. The best way to get to the city centre is to take the tube (underground train) or the buses that run every few minutes.
